Uttering the word “Durga” automatically brings an image to our minds, an image of a fierce form of Shakti or power. However, if one were to ask about her origins, they would be hard pressed to find even a shred of evidence for what makes Durga so powerful. Our young minds are filled with many stories about her greatness and wonderment but little is known about the source and true history of this glorified deity. If we want to delve deeper into this entity and truly understand who she is and what she means, we must first travel back centuries into time where we will see that she was not always revered as the Goddess that we know her as today. Durga has many different forms, but her most popular avatar is Durga, the fierce form of the goddess, who is believed to have descended to earth to kill the demon Mahishasura. She wears a snake necklace around her neck and rides an equally powerful tiger. She defeats evil with ease, at times disfiguring her foes by ripping their faces up with her nails which are said to have the strength of ten thousand elephants. Some believe that she is Saraswati in disguise while others believe that she is Parvati in disguise, fighting the demons on behalf of Lord Shiva who was sleeping in his temple when the war took place. Durga is stated to have been born from a burning mountain, which is called Salagrama in her honour. She has a very fierce and masculine form and has numerous arms. There are a few different theories regarding how she came to be depicted in such a fierce manner. Firstly, there are those who believe that this was purely symbolic, attempting to depict the goddess in her true essence and not necessarily representing an actual war or sacrifice that happened at one point in time. Secondly, there are those who do not think that this representation is an accurate depiction of the goddess but rather it shows her “true nature” with all of its raw power and power... Finally, some believe that she is nothing more than a creation of man to try to bring some sense of order to their lives. They state that if one were to truly know the history of Durga they would realize that there is no truth behind the ideals of her greatness, but rather it is something that was created by man. This theory is further supported by the fact that there are many different versions of her mythological stories with slight variations on each story making them slightly different from one another. One example of this variation can be seen in the attire given to Durga, or rather what she removed from each demon or male who opposed her during the myth. Depending on the version of the story, her attire varies from being nothing more than a tiger skin to being obesely obese clothing. She rides on different animals depending on which version of the story is being told. There are even some versions that have Durga not riding anything at all, meaning she is walking over the earth in full power. From these variations, it is clear to see that there was no one particular story in which everyone agreed upon and therefore it was no true representation of what had actually happened or what her real powers were at that point in time. cfa1e77820
